In around 2,000 BC, a two-mile avenue to the River Avon was created. From southwest Wales, the builders imported 82 'bluestones', weighing over four tonnes each. To reach the 70 site they would have had to travel 240 miles over land and water. These bluestones were used to construct a double circle inside the site. It is believed the builders never finished this design because they already had the idea to erect the third, and most impressive, phase.

This started in around 1900 BC, with the selection of 75 loose blocks of sandstone, known as sarsens, from Avebury, 20 miles away. Using rollers and ropes, these 25- tonne, 17-feet-long rocks were pulled to the site where they were then shaped and lifted into upright positions. The architectural detail of this stage is phenomenal, and the lintel stones that cap the pillars are actually curved to fit in the large circle. The Welsh bluestones were repositioned, and the structure was complete.

In each stage, the stones were placed at specific points demonstrating the position of the sun and moon at important times. The site was in continual use until about 1,000 BC, but we still do not know exactly what it was used for. Very little human or cultural debris has been found on the site, so there can be no definitive answers.

Some experts say that this absence of historic litter leads to the suggestion that the structure was a temple or sacred site. Many of the other 900 stone circles in Britain served many uses and were often meeting places, so they often have remnants of ancient day-to-day life. Similarly, the amount of trouble endured, and the sheer scale of the project, indicates that Stonehenge was something of immense importance. In it, he claimed a computer had proven that Stonehenge marked many astronomical alignments. He even went so far as to say that Stonehenge was a computer itself, designed by the Ancient Britons to read the stars and calculate upcoming eclipses, but many experts feel he has not discovered the true significance of the structure.

In the seventeenth century historians believed the structure had been built by ancient Celtic priests, and many modern druids feel it is their right to perform rituals and ceremonies at the site. Yesterday I posted an old blog entry if you noticed, dated more than one year back. My ideas about sorcery have not changed much fundamentally, but they evolved a bit.

Today I'd like to talk about raw magic, the kind of magic that I'd like to see Sorcerers literally wield.

TYPES OF MAGIC: PREMISES AND DISCLAIMERS

Ok, so if you're here, you probably know that in D&D there's always been this great divide between Arcane magic and Divine magic. Psionic are considered "non-magic" traditionally, or simply another "power source" in more recent times. Always more recently, with 4th edition, we have become accustomed to distinguish also Primal and Shadow magic, and on a smaller scale even Elemental magic, although it never became a "stand-alone" power source (and the same can be said of Shadow).

Strangely enough, I think this latter power sources, with their murky boundaries and association to other power sources, are a good thing for the game, not mechanically speaking of course since mechanics don't touch power sources, but story-wise. Because it reminds players and DMs alike (if they're a bit open minded), that magic is vast and varied, and that it's not a symmetric and perfect system. This allows for magic to stay a bit more mysterious and... Magic.

This is just a premise for what I will say, and I started it with "strangely enough", because what I will do is actually a bit of a classification of what I think constitutes "The Arcane", something that could give the impression of me trying to over-classify, so I wanted a disclaimer stating that even if I want to try a new classification, first and foremost I want magic, and in particular Arcane magic to stay mysterious/blurry (the "arcane" word coming from Latin "arcanum", meaning "hidden"...)

THE ARCANE

So, first of all, I'd like Arcane magic, or better yet a general "the Arcane", to have a broader spectrum.

Since 3rd edition, it included sometimes vastly different forms, such as the Warlock's invocations. If you speak a bit of 3rd edition, you surely remember how "spell", "spell-like ability", and "supernatural ability" were quite different things in the rules, although all of them could have dealt with Arcane magic. In a way, I'd like a return of those distinctions, but much more within the lore than within the rules. Rules-wise, it should always be left to DMs to decide how much to complicate the game, but flavor-wise, sometimes it's better to mention stuff that "could "turn out useless, than not mention it and make (some) games poorer because they didn't have the right inspirations.

Where am I getting at? Well, I'd like to split the Arcane quite a bit.

A Sorcerer or Warlock casting the same spells of a Wizard will "rightly "call for cries of "Sorcerers/Warlocks should be Wizard subclasses". And as I explained in the previous post, this is exactly what we should avoid if we want variety in the game, spellcasters-wise.

My simple idea for the Arcane is actually story-based, and that's what I like the most.

DEFINITION AND HISTORY OF THE ARCANE

I define the Arcane as magic that exists without a clear purpose. Divine magic is the power of the gods and thus an instrument of their will. Psionics is practically the same, but coming from mere mortals. Primal magic has the ultimate purpose of maintaining natural balance. The Arcane instead, simply exists. It's part of the fundamental workings of the universe, but it serves no will or purpose, until it gets used for one.

My story for the Arcane and how it came to include many different forms of magic is simple.

First of all, came Raw Magic. I view Raw (Arcane) magic as a "residual radiation" from the creation of the universe. An invisible (by most) energy that basically connects and permeates all things. Think quantum physics, think electromagnetic waves, whatever. In fantasy terms, it's just a hidden magical energy that always existed.

Directly connected to Raw Magic is Elemental Magic. Again, it is "Arcane" only since it's a type of magic without purpose. And think about it simply as the material counterpart of Raw magic. Whereas Raw is more like e.m. waves, Elemental is about matter of course.

So what makes these two types of magic different from, say, the magic behind actual Wizard spells? Well, if we speak of magic "behind" spells, this is exactly that. Spells are fundamentally powered by these. But just like a man has no use of a gasoline tank without a vehicle propelled by it, Raw and Elemental magic by themselves can't be used by men to do nothing. And Wizardry is the vehicle to use them, under the form of spells. BUT. Sorcerers are a special case, in that they "are" the vehicle.

So where did Wizardry (aka Spells) or Witchcraft (aka Eldritch Magic, aka Warlock's spell-like abilities) come from? I say Wizardry was born when generation after generation of Sorcerer, the "code of magic" was "cracked", and mortals discovered that with words, symbols, gestures, and other special requirements, they could basically "code" Raw and Elemental magic into "programs" called Spells. Alternatively, it could have been a cosmic event, or the intervention of a powerful entity to make Wizardry possible, but in my view, it's simply a deep "scientific" effort, made possible by many a generation of Sorcerers studying the way magic worked and the way they could channel it, until they discovered they could teach it to non-Sorcerer individuals.

Witchcraft or Eldritch Magic differs from Wizardry in this view of mine in that it needs not to be studied, but it's borrowed from powerful beings, who actually bestow these powers on Warlocks, at the expense of a Pact being stipulated between the two. I view these spell-like abilities a lot like "the Wizardry of other worlds". That is, wizardry evolved differently, in other places and among other beings, thus becoming quite different, and then bestowed onto mortals by those beings, in a way in which common mortals can't. After all, a Fey Pact is not made with common pixies and sprites, but with god-like arch-fey, so the difference between Witchcraft and Wizardry is not much this of being bestowed by others, but the fact that it's plainly different and normal Wizard spells can't codify it because it is linked to the nature of the planes and beings that originated it first. To use another analogy, think of Raw Magic as the very gamut of possible sounds, Wizardry as one language made using those sounds, and Witchcraft as a group of languages evolved from the same sounds but so different compared to the Wizardry language, that it can't even be codified using the same symbols, or not with any symbol at all.

RAW MAGIC IN THE GAME

So would it be apparent, inside the game world, that Sorcerers use another type of magic compared to Wizards? In my view, yes, and for multiple reasons:

* Sorcerers normally have less variety of powers at their command, compared to Wizards (and this is where I keep tradition...)
* Sorcerers channel their magic not with complicated words and gestures, but sometimes with strong movements, sometimes with a blink of an eye. Somatic components could be stronger for Sorcerers (or not), but verbal and material components are unheard of.
* Sorcerers quite simply don't cast spells. They channel raw magic. This means that the effects they produce rarely look the same twice: they are created on the fly, and look more chaotic. A Sorcerer could replicate a fireball, but it would probably look more messy, since every "part" of it is made on the fly by the Sorcerer, instead of being taken from a codified spell.
* Sorcerers actually see the world differently. They see the Raw magic they channel, and they collect it from the world around them. Elementalist sorcerers seem to have more of an inner power, whereas Chaotic sorcerers (those focusing on raw magic only, will talk about this in another post) pretty much use the energy around them. In both cases though, I see Sorcerers having "energy recharging" moments coupled with "energy discharging" and "power surges". I envision this as a form of "breathing magic", very different from the arbitrary casting of Wizards. So while Sorcerers can actually "create spells on the fly", which would seem like an enormous freedom, they also have to follow some cosmic rules while doing so, because they do not have all the power they need, they have to collect it first, and then release it. And even in morphing/channeling Raw Magic and Elemental Magic, not exactly "anything "is possible, they still have some constraints.

The Crack In The Sun Or Pixies Children

There I was, completely enthralled by artist and author Robert M. Place discussing the life and influences of Pamela Colman Smith a/k/a Pixie, the artist who drew and painted the images for the deck most people think of when they think of Tarot. I am sometimes a co-host with Donnaleigh de LaRose on her inspiring, meaty, funny and informative tarot show on Blog Talk Radio called Beyond Worlds.

Just my own little plug for Donnaleigh and her efforts: Beyond Worlds is one of the best sources of free information on tarot there is. So, if you have internet access but you are on a terrible budget, don't have money to travel for conferences or in-person classes, Beyond Worlds is the perfect place to learn more about tarot from the most respected people I know. Where else can you get a free education from authorities on the topic? Did I mention "free"?

Back to this broadcast, I was so happy Donnaleigh had tagged me to be a guest host for this particular show. Bob's book "The Tarot, History, Symbolism, and Divination" is one of my favorites. And he creates beautiful images in his own tarot decks that have at once a simplicity of line and a complexity of imagery. At one Reader's Studio, Bob taught a segment on his own tarot spread reading the Chakras that was more diagnostic than a CT-Scan. Plus, at the last Reader's Studio I snagged a couple of his sterling silver pins. Bob's kind of an encyclopedia in himself too so just listening to him takes you places you never expected to go.

So the cool thing about this episode, and all the other episodes of Beyond Worlds, is that Donnaleigh posts the recorded session to make it available for people who were unable to attend the show live. You can listen to Bob's description of Pixie's early influences, including placing her not only in the right timeline but also among the people she knew.

We started laughing about Pixie being like Forrest Gump, showing up with so many famous names. Ellen Terry, the most famous actress of her time, was like a mother to her after her own mother died. William Butler Yeats introduced Pixie to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in London, a group "dedicated to the goal of uniting with the divine, achieving henosis, and perfecting oneself" according to the Wikipedia listing. She was close to Bram "Uncle Brammie" Stoker in her theatre experience and illustrated his 1911 book "The Lair of the White Worm".

Pixie was an artist whose family was rich and as it turns out not painfully dull. Her mother was an actress. Pixie lived in New York, England and Jamaica in her early years due to her father's business enterprise. Her mom died when Pixie was young, but not too young to remember. Her father apparently was "in her court" and assisted her with her career.

I decided to look for little Pixie in the Tarot, her Tarot, her children, herself as child. I was surprised, since she had been a kindergarten teacher and had illustrated at least one children's book, that so few of her cards show children. I looked specifically for children, not teenagers or young adults and found Death, The Sun, Judgement, the 6 of Cups, the 10 of Cups, the 6 of Swords and the 10 of Pentacles.

My sense was that she would say the Tarot is an adult thing. The search for mystical knowledge in the world of symbols for her seems less like Arthur Edward Waite's prescriptive knowledge of their use and meaning and much more like the discovery of the eternal while listening to Debussy. Our Pixie approached the Tarot from a "right-brained" point of view and I expect she felt the images came to her, in their detail, rather than being drafted, directed and choreographed. And in that adult thing that was Tarot, the child could only be a child with a child's vision, faith, point of view.

In Death, the dark-haired innocent is wreathed with flowers and is on her knees, staring Death full on as he rides through the landscape on his pale horse with his back armor. The little one reaches back for her mother's hand, but her mother is unable to look or respond. The child views Death as a small person, someone who could not stop the horse or its rider. The events of change are so much bigger than a child.

In The Sun, the child rides the white horse, both bare-backed, without armor, without protection or distance from each other. I thought of Pixie's childhood in Jamaica, in the warmth of the overgrown garden, free, yet protected by walls built by someone else, triumphant, delighted in the day. For what else do we have but today?

The children in Judgement look up at the trumpeting angel. Where their parents strike a pose to be uplifted by inner enlightenment or reach out to feel the music, the children raise their arms as much to greet the angel as to embrace it and even to conduct the music. Is it easier to arise from the past with less baggage? It is so much easier to fly when you still believe you can.

Still safe within the walls of home, the children in the 6 of Cups appear to be the scene of the older child giving a cup of a flower to the younger. Is the gift incomplete? The older child seems to offer the cup bare-handed, knees bent to the younger one. Or is the older child, unable to understand the significance yet, accepting a gift, bending to smell the fragrant flower, from the younger child whose hand is gloved, never quite touching. Will the child understand, only in retrospect, the significance of the gift? Memory is like this, a picture without touching.

The children in the 10 of Cups dance together, child-happy in a landscape where the parents appear to understand and appreciate the gift of the bliss they have been given. For children, these days last forever. For an adult, they are gone too soon. Like a rainbow, were they ever there at all?

I understood too well the child in the boat in the 6 of Swords, sitting with an adult-mother?-cloaked as if in mourning or bundled against the cold. The thoughts are heavy in the boat and threaten to sink it as they make their way from rough water to a far-away land. Someone else, someone strong steers the boat. Someone else is in charge. My family left our home for a place we had only heard of. It was an adventure. It was a mourning. It was refuge.

Finally, the 10 of Pentacles' child peeks out from around her happy and confident mother's skirt to touch the dog. The dog seeks the touch, however, of the patchworked old man outside the gates of security and the known universe. Is he a beggar? A wizard cloaked in magical symbols? The parents focus on the now, but the child looks outside the gates to know what may be, drawn by the comforting touch of the warm and loving dogs who seem to know the old man. Is this the real thing? Or is it just fantasy? One thing is for certain, for good or ill, all this will, must change.

I think Pixie shows us that childhood is to be held precious and dear, protected and encouraged and yet is so often misunderstood. Near the XIX in many printings of the RWS deck on The Sun, there is an extra jagged line, thought by some to be a crack in the printing plate. The "flaw" is the way of things. All things must change and become themselves again.

A Gambling Hand

Use the following items to prepare a gambling mojo hand on a Thursday when the moon is growing.

* 1st Pentacle of Jupiter (see note below)
* Lodestone / Magnetic Sand
* Rabbit's Foot
* Chamomile
* Cinnamon Chips
* Silver Dime
* John The Conqueror Root
* Jupiter Oil
* Money Drawing Incense

Mark a green or yellow candle with your name and the words "winning luck". Dress the candle with Jupiter Oil stroking your finger over your name towards you 7 times saying "In the name of Jupiter, spirit of wealth and increase, winning luck come to me that I may achieve my desire!" Set the candle in a holder and set it on top of an overturned saucer.

Take a red-pen and write your name on the back of the 1St Pentacle of Jupiter seven times. Anoint the four corners and center of the paper with Jupiter Oil. Anoint the lodestone with a drop of Jupiter Oil and place it in the center of the paper. Feed it some magnetic sand and say "As I feed you so will you provide me with the luck I will need to achieve my desire. Amen." Fold the paper towards you three times and place it under the saucer on top of which is the candle.

Light the candle and say "In the name of Jupiter, spirit of wealth and increase may fortune smile on me that I may achieve my desire!"

Next, take a red or green flannel mojo bag and one at a time anoint the hard items with Jupiter Oil, telling it what you want it to do and place it in the bag. Then place the soft items in the bag.

This might seem a rather extreme notion and yet it is referred to in a letter from the Congregation for the Clergy on the occasion of the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God.

The letter quotes the antiphon from the old Roman Breviary and the Tract in the Mass Salve sancte parens from the 1962 Roman Missal:

'"Gaude, Maria Virgo, cunctas haereses tu sola interemisti in universo mundo" - Rejoice, O Virgin Mary, thou only hast killed all heresies in the universal world'.But here is the letter in full (with some addedcemphases):

The connection between the Lord's birth and Mary's Divine maternity is clearly expressed in one of St Cyril of Alexandria's (+444) twelve anathemas, which was accepted by the Council of Ephesus (431) and defined the dogma of the faith that Mary of Nazareth is the Mother of God": 'If anyone does not confess that Emmanuel is God in truth, and therefore that the Holy Virgin is the Mother of God, for she bore in a fleshly way the Word of God made flesh, let him be anathema"'. (Denz-Schonm, 252 - www.clerus.org/bibliaclerusonline/en/dfi.htm#cg ) Only a few days ago we adored the presence of the Word Incarnate in the humble manager at Bethlehem. Now, the Church invites us to turn our gaze towards that other magnificent figure in the crib, the Mother of God, God made flesh.

In recent times the devotion to the Mother of God has weakened in some sectors of the Church. THERE WERE CONCERNS, BY SOME, THAT HONOURING MARY TOO MUCH MAY TURN OUR ATTENTION FROM THE ADORATION OF CHRIST. It was therefore deemed appropriate the radicalise the Christo centricity, highlighting only the uniqueness of Christ's salvific mediation to the detriment of the participative mediation of the angels, saints and the Mother of God. In doing so they have forgotten the ancient adage: ad Jesum per Mariam - 'to Jesus through Mary'. The Mother always leads us towards her Son, and never further away from Him. The II Vatican Council expressed this teaching through the following words: : '"For ALL THE SALVIFIC INFLUENCE OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN ON MEN ORIGINATES, NOT FROM SOME INNER NECESSITY, BUT FROM THE DIVINE PLEASURE. It flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rests on His mediation, depends entirely on it and draws all its power from it. IN NO WAY DOES IT IMPEDE, BUT RATHER DOES IT FOSTER THE IMMEDIATE UNION OF THE FAITHFUL WITH CHRIST."' (Lumen Gentium, n.60 www.clerus.org/bibliaclerusonline/en/8cjb1.htm ).

In reality we must recognise that Mary's role does not constitute an obstacle, but rather is an efficacious aid the admission of faith in Christ. THE MOTHER OF GOD, WITH HER VIRGINAL PURITY ALSO REPRESENTS AND DEFENDS THE PURITY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE. The following beautiful Marian antiphon is found in the breviary: "'GAUDE, MARIA VIRGO, CUNCTAS HAERESES TU SOLA INTEREMISTI IN UNIVERSO MUNDO" - REJOICE, O VIRGIN MARY, THOU ONLY HAST KILLED ALL HERESIES IN THE UNIVERSAL WORLD'. The renowned biblical scholar, Ignatius de la Potterie, commented on this antiphon as follows: '"It is not that Mary had done something in her life against heresies, but the recognition of Mary in the Marian dogmas, that is a sign and bulwark of the steadfastness of the faith'".

Cardinal Ratzinger, in his book-interview with Vittorio Messori, (Report on the faith) highlighted that '"Mary triumphed over every heresy'". If we grant Mary the place that is suggested in Tradition and dogma, we find her already truly central to the Christology of the Church. The first dogmas, regarding her perpetual virginity and divine maternity, and also the ultimate dogmas (the Immaculate Conception and her bodily Assumption into heavenly glory), are the secure basis for the Christian faith in the incarnation of the Son of God. The Marian Dogmas implicitly confess both faith in the living God, who can intervene in the material world, and also, the faith regarding the ultimate realities (resurrection of the flesh and therefore the transfiguration of the same material world). Also, ONE HOPES FOR THE REALISATION OF THE PROJECT TO RE-INTRODUCE, PREFERABLY ON THE FEAST OF MARY'S BODILY ASSUMPTION TO HEAVEN ON THE 15TH AUGUST, THE BEAUTIFUL ANTIPHON PUT ASIDE FOR THE LITURGICAL REFORM.' (in 30 Giorni, 12 [October 1995], p.71).

IT ISN'T POSSIBLE TO BE CHRISTOCENTRIC IF WE ARE NOT SOLIDLY MARIAN. In these days the Church prays in a particular way for peace. It is appropriate that the faithful turn to the ever Virgin Mother of God, to obtain from the Lord, through her intersession, the gift of peace for every one of us, for the Church, and the world.
