Spirit Work

Spirit work is not for everyone. I personally really like it, it calls to me. However several things must be considered. First like I just said, it is not for everyone. If you have tried it a few times and it really doesn't appeal to you, don't do it. It is just NOT for you. There is nothing wrong with this, your specialties lie in other places. Second everyone is different, as a teacher or new spirit worker there is NO way to accurately predict how different people will react. When a student tries spirit work and has a bad experience I go over in my mind all the things I could have done better, or warned them about etc. However I can't spend my energy here as it serves no good. Let me say here that not every first experience is bad. If you are like me you jumped that hedge right away and headed into the dark unknown ready to face your battles. Though not everyone is willing to do this nor should they expect to be.

I often wonder if those of us who have had the Shamanic Death/Rebirth or have done shadow work and looked at the scary ugly parts of our self's over and over again have an easier time of it. Once you have looked death in the face it is not as scary as you think but again not everyone is the same. I think it boils down to two things. 1) Where you are on your path, and 2) Where your path is taking you. If neither of these line up with spirit work then perhaps it isn't the best for you.

Now this is not a blog about all doom and gloom. There is good work to be done here. If you are a diviner visiting the other side, opening up to possession can be hard, but rewarding work. We do not just take from spirits we give. As a diviner you are constantly asking the spirits for messages for your clients. Offerings are good, but visiting is always better, and both are needed to keep a working relationship with those spirits. Spirit work can be unsettling, but it doesn't have to. Oftentimes it is very rewarding offering deeper incite into clients problems as well as your own personal work.

If you are interested in becoming a spirit worker proper preparation and trained teachers are necessary and can skillfully guide you on these journeys. You should expect your teachers to make sure that you are becoming skilled at rhythmic breathing, grounding, shielding and saining or smudging. These must become second nature before any type of ritual possession is practiced, light or full it doesn't matter proper training and preparation are important. Lastly you may find that after working with spirits from the other side you own energy changes. This is to be expected as journeying to another realm or having spirits from the other side visit you will change the energy in the room, and your body, just remember like attracts like. Countering these energies with rituals cleansing, baths, and meditations that focus on the opposite type of energy will help keep you balances.

This is not a practice to be rushed and many spirit workers spend years in intense training so they can navigate the dark highways of the other world. Always use caution, and anytime you work ritual possession or spirit work, make sure to have an experienced guide or ward to watch over you and is able to retrieve you if need be.

Liberating Process Bruce Epperly

Process Theology has always been something of a mystery to many of us. At points it makes great sense of God and God's creation. It's modern in its orientation. But, it also has its own language/vocabulary that mystifies as much as it enlightens. Bruce Epperly, who is a Process Theologian, wants to introduce us to the ideas of Process in a new way, and I look forward to reading the book. In the meantime Bruce has offered to share a series of posts that will introduce us to the concepts of Process theology, suggesting that we will find a liberating message in this view of God. I am therefore delighted to be welcoming Bruce back for a conversation with you the reader of this blog. By the way, Bruce will be give the second set of Perry Gresham Lectures at Central Woodward Christian Church in September 2011, so put that on your calendar.

LIBERATING PROCESSBRUCE EPPERLY

For many years, my mission has been to make process theology accessible to everyday people. We live in a world of change and transition. We can't step in the same river twice, and life comes at us fast. We need a way of making sense of movement, of finding just enough stability to live creatively in a world of change. I believe process theology, based on the work of Alfred North Whitehead, Charles Hartshorne, Bernard Loomer, and John Cobb provides one such pathway to making sense of the movements of life and finding God in the midst of change.

Though it seeks to describe our experience of reality, sadly, the language of process theology has been held captive by allegiance to the words rather than the spirit of Whitehead's philosophy. This has reduced the circle of its impact to scholars, in particular, Whiteheadian scholars who argue over words such as "prehension, initial aim, concrescence, eternal objects," and "primordial, consequent, and superjective natures of God." These are good words and I have spent years living with them. But, I want to invite you to live process - not just speak about it. It has been said that the professions often conspire against the laity. This is surely true of professional process philosophers and theologians who debate about how many actual occasions can dance on the head of pin, rather than inviting people to experience the living world of divine and human creativity! Process theology can be lived and I invite you to live it with me over the next several weeks.

If you're so inclined, you may enjoy my recently published, "Process Theology: A Guide for the Perplexed". It invites you to live the spirit of process theology in the same way that "Holy Adventure: 41 Days of Audacious Living" invites you into the world of process spirituality. Sometime in the next year a third volume will emerge - the working titles are "Emerging Process" and "Process Theology - Unplugged and Unleashed in the Post-modern World". My goal is to transform the language and the experience of process theology so that it can be a force in healing persons and the planet.

But, this week, let's start with the very nature of process itself. Stop a moment and just enjoy your experience right now. What do you notice? Do you notice movement and change, or changelessness? Do you notice many things or just one thing? Do you notice a sense of purpose or aimlessness? Is your experience creative or simply passive?

Process theology begins with the simple fact of experience in all its variety. Process theology believes that each moment's experience is artistic in nature: you bring together a variety of stimuli into one concrete and complex experience that then gives way to the next moment of experience. Your experience is unique; no one experiences the universe from your standpoint or with your sense of value - of your sense of attraction or distaste. You are the artist of your experience; even when you think you're passive, you are constantly bringing together many feelings, thoughts, and influences into one novel moment of experience. Recognizing this, process theology encourages you to claim your artistry and creativity. Process theology is the "artist's way" of looking at the world: you are a creator, you are shaping your life even as the world shapes you, you are influenced by the world, but have a glimmer of freedom in each moment.

Freedom, creativity, and novelty are at the heart of process. Today, take time to liberate process thought from its language by living creatively, by seeing yourself as an artist of experience, by maximizing your own and others' freedom to choose their self-creation. See the concrete limitations of life as the materials for personal and communal transformation and artistry. You are the artist of your own experience, after all!

Patrick would become a priest while he was home and would also be ordained a bishop. He went back to Ireland to try and rid them of the pagans and Druids that overwhelmed their country. Patrick made it his goal to convert as many Irish as possible to the ways of Christianity, which he had great success doing. A shamrock is typically associated with Saint Patrick because he utilized it as a way to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. Each leaf of the shamrock stood for either God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit.

4.) Saint Thomas Aquinas - Saint Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint of universities and students because of his love for knowledge and educating others. His feast day falls on January 28th each year. Saint Thomas was put under the watch of the Benedictines of Monte Casino in his youth. He learned faster than anybody they had seen before and had the patience of a full grown individual when he was just a boy. Once Thomas was old enough to make his own life decisions he chose to join the Order of Saint Dominic. His family did not support his decision and this hurt Thomas inside, but he knew he was making the right choice. Saint Thomas studied under Saint Albert and was one of the best students Albert ever had. Saint Thomas is remembered as one of the great theologians of the Catholic Church.

3.) Saint John the Baptist - Saint John the Baptist died a martyr just like Jesus. He told all of his followers about Jesus and how he truly was the son of God. John was the son of Zachary and Elizabeth, and he was conceived even though Elizabeth was quite old at the time. God sent the angel Gabriel to inform Zachary that his wife would become pregnant and that is exactly what happened despite the terrible odds. John is best known for baptizing men and women in the Jordan River, most notably Jesus himself was baptized by Saint John. John knew precisely who Jesus was and was flattered that Jesus came to him to be baptized and not the other way around. Herod was the ruler at that time and was not a fan of how much power Saint John the Baptist had over large masses of people. He had him arrested on false accusations and beheaded for no good reason. He suffered for his ever strong faith in Christianity and Jesus. Saint John the Baptist is the last prophet from the Old Testament and was the final prophet before Jesus Christ.

2.) Saint Michael - Saint Michael is the patron saint of police officers and his feast day falls on September 29th each year. Saint Michael's name is almost always followed by "the archangel" because that is what he is. He was the leading archangel in the battle in heaven between the angels and Satan and his followers. He is known as one of the great protectors of the Catholic Church forever, and that is why he is the patron saint of police officers. The Greeks used to hold Michael to a higher regard than the rest of the archangels because of his heroic actions displayed in the battle against Satan.

When he reached the other side he was completely out of breath and tired, the boy turned to him and told him that he had just experienced the weight of the world upon his shoulders and that he was Christ. This sentiment is true not only of athiests' attempt to understand Christianity in general, but non-Catholics' attempt to understand Catholicism in particular. If you come from a background with explicit rules and norms, like Eastern Orthodoxy, Islam, or Orthodox Judaism, Catholicism seems less imposing, I think, than if you come from a background where you think you're free of binding rules and norms of behavior, whether that background is atheism/agnosticism, secularized Judaism, or many of the strains of Protestantism.

Of course, even those who fall within this second camp "have "binding rulse and norms of behavior, they just don't bother to write them into a list. I recall a scene from the TV show "the Office," where Michael says to his ex-girlfriend, "You cheated on me "when I explicitly asked you not to"?" The joke, of course, is that you don't "need to "explicitly ask someone you're exclusively dating not to cheat on you (and, in fact, it's sort of weird to), and the fact that his anger stemmed from the fact he'd asked it expressly was strangely misplaced. It's just something both parties implicitly understand to be an unstated rule governing their relationship.

But Catholicism "does" expicitly ask us not to cheat in our relationship with God. And She goes further, specifying the sort of conduct which would constitute cheating. But as with everything She does, these rules are intended to aid "us". We're required to attend Mass every Sunday. If we understood fully what was happening in the Mass, I wonder if we wouldn't have to be dragged "out "of church instead of into it. The fresco painted from relying on these people's descriptions of the elephant Catholicism is nigh upon unrecognizable to those who have seen the real elephant. This should be remembered for two reasons.

If you're not a Catholic, charity should compel you to prevent passing judgment on the Church until you hear it from the elephant-horse's mouth: find the Church documents or statements on the issue, talk to Catholics you know to be good Catholics about what it means, etc. Just as you wouldn't want to be understood entirely by what your exes claimed about you (or those you'd had a falling out with, generally), that's not a fair view of the Church, either.
