Who Your Shepherd A Lectionary Reflection

ACTS 2:42-47

1 PETER 2:19-25

JOHN 10:1-10

WHO'S YOUR SHEPHERD?

The opening lines of Psalm 23 answers this question about as succinctly as one could hope for. "The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want." The shepherd image is a prominent one in Scripture. It's to the shepherds that the angels appear bearing the announcement of the nativity and of course David is the shepherd king. As a congregational pastor I'm only too aware of this imagery as it relates to my vocation. I must say, however, that while congregations like the shepherd/sheep imagery, usually they're thinking in chaplaincy-like terms and therefore don't indulge all of the implications and nuances of this analogy. Most church members likely don't envision themselves as being not too bright and thus in need of constant monitoring - when they're not safely tucked into their pen. Even if they see themselves in the pastor as shepherd, if they envision themselves as sheep, it's usually in rather independent terms, even though the biblical texts tend not to entertain thoughts of feral sheep. But however we envision this relationship, it would be wise to remember that we pastors aren't the Lord, who is my shepherd. It's only by analogy and by imitation that any of us who claim this vocation can see ourselves in the role of shepherd - and even then only with great humility.

As we start with the words of Psalm 23, which is the Psalm for the fourth Sunday of Easter (year A), that reminds us that the Lord is our shepherd, we can consider the texts for this fourth Sunday of Easter, especially as they highlight the role of the shepherd. The one text that doesn't address the shepherding image is Acts 2:42-47, where Luke lays out for us his vision of what the church looked like at its founding - a church that was devoted to the Apostles Teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers. In this picture the Apostles not only engage in teaching, but they also amaze everyone with signs and wonders. And in words that may surprise good American Christians that embrace capitalism, this community is described as one that shares everything in common, having sold their possessions and used these proceeds for the common good of the community, so that none would be in need.

If we really want to know what an Acts 2 church looks like, perhaps we can find it pretty well spelled out here in these verses. They were a communal sort of people. This wasn't a movement of rugged individualists, but people who understood that they must exist in relationship to each other. And maybe that's where the shepherd/sheep image connects. This isn't a feral church, full of individualists focused on their own spiritual improvement, but folks joined together by a common faith committed to the common good. It was a vision of spirituality that centered around teaching, fellowship (which is much more than sitting around at a coffee hour "chewing the fat"), food (here again this idea of breaking bread needs to be pondered and explored with some depth so that we might catch all of the nuances and implications -- that include the eucharist but likely means more than this), and finally there is the word about prayer, which reminds us that the church is more than simply a service group - it's a community of faith linked together by a common faith. The church may be a flock, and it may have a shepherd, but that shepherd is not simply a religious leader, no matter how committed she or he might be, "for the Lord is my shepherd."

As we read the biblical text we must always take care not to read our own modern sensibilities of pluralism and tolerance and even universalism into texts that can't sustain these interpretations. We must also be careful about how we read our own needs and desires into the lives of the early Christians. Indeed, we must even be careful about how we understand Jesus, always mindful of Albert Schweitzer's critique of the early quests for the historical Jesus - we have a tendency to look in the well and see our own reflections. I may have a fairly broad sense of whom God might welcome at the table, but at least some early Christians might not have been quite so welcoming.

I make these comments as preparation for hearing the message of John 10. If we listen rather closely we will hear Jesus offer a fairly narrow vision of the path to God's realm. At least in John's understanding, Jesus isn't a religious pluralist. Anyone who enters the sheepfold, that protective pen we call the church, through any access point other than the gate (and Jesus is the gate) then they must be thieves or bandits who have climbed over the high protective wall. As John tells this story, which begins with Jesus answering the Pharisees, whom he has accused of spiritual blindness, the sheep will only follow the voice of the true shepherd - for they know the shepherd's voice. If anyone, namely the Pharisees, seek access to the flock without going through the gate, then they are thieves. It would appear that John is concerned about false teachers seeking to gain access to the church, and are doing it secretively. When first given the message of the sheepfold and the thieves, the Pharisees don't seem to get it so Jesus gets more explicit: "I am the gate for the sheep," and only those who enter through that gate "will be saved." The Lord is the true shepherd and they, who are in John's estimation blind guides, are false shepherds. Now, we must remember that John is known for his caricatures of the Pharisees, so we must remember that while the Pharisees may have seen things differently from Jesus, they sought to be faithful shepherds of Israel. More positively, however, we can and should see Jesus as the one who guides us and cares for us and protects us. He is our shepherd, who guides us through dark valleys to places of peace and sustenance.

I end with the reading from 1 Peter, who encourages the church(es) to whom this letter is written to endure their suffering patiently. If you suffer for what is good and right, then it will be credited to you as God's approval. Then we're reminded that just as Christ has suffered for us, having committed no sin, when abused he didn't return the abuse, and when threatened didn't threaten. Instead Christ entrusted himself "to the one who judges justly." It is worth noting that this word about suffering for the sake of righteousness is given to slaves, who may have endured harsh treatment from their masters. It's not surprising that the creators of the lectionary have separated out this text from its context, but we need to hear the broader context. Many early Christians were slaves, and being unable to live in freedom, were being encouraged to think more broadly about their place in the realm of God. Remember that Christ has suffered, and so follow his example. He is the one who has born our sins upon his body, and by doing so has brought us healing (salvation). It is an image that draws upon the suffering servant passage of Isaiah 53.

We can understand this passage speaking to early Christians seeking to survive an oppressively hierarchical culture. The question that faces us as we seek to understand this text, and others like it, in a contemporary age. We are not in a situation where our survival depends on being submissive to slave owners or oppressive governments. In addition, submission may not be the way we are to live our lives as followers of Jesus. Resistance against oppression is likely our calling - though this would be nonviolent and not violent. Oppressive systemic situations need to be dealt with, for they stand counter to the ways of the one who is the "shepherd and guardian of our souls." As Ron Allen and Clark Williamson point out, as we deal with this passage, especially if we're preachers, we need to start with the assumption that the kinds of hierarchical social structures we find listed in 1 Peter 2 are not in line with the ways of a "God of unconditional love whose purpose is for all people to live together in egalitarian relationships of love" [Allen and Williamson, "Preaching the Letters without Dismissing the Law"," pp. 58-59]. Allen and Williamson also suggest that when it comes to suffering we need to affirm the principle that (1) "God does not want people to suffer, (2) that God feels such suffering and supports people through it, and (3) that God is actively working to end conditions that lead to suffering" [p. 59].

The Psalm with which we began this conversation answers the question of who is your shepherd by reminding us that the Lord is our Shepherd, and therefore we shall not want. The Lord leads us to green grass and still waters, even if the path takes us through dark valleys. In the end, because the shepherd is with us, we can even dine in the presence of our enemies without fear. There are various kinds of shepherds, but as Christians we are called to follow the Lord our shepherd and live our lives in accordance with God's nature and purpose. Knowing what that is, of course, requires discernment.

Day Of Thunder

Here is a ritual in honor of the feast day of Quirinus, the Sabine God of storms and thunder. This ritual is also quite powerful when performed during an actual thunderstorm.

Yoga And Meditation For The Rest Of Us

Yoga, meditation, chanting... mmmm, all great things for your body, mind and spirit. But sometimes, in the hectic rush of everyday life, thinking of bending your body into a pretzel, or even breathing slowly, can be a huge challenge. How can you possibly relax when you have bills to pay, work to do, and life to attend to?

Don't worry. Relaxing is easy. Healing yourself and your life is not as hard as you think. You don't need to read 20 books on self-help or sit at the feet of the guru. Remember, magic, healing, and enjoyment of life are all your natural birthrights as a human being. You just have to remember how!

In fact, did you know that you've already done all 84 poses of yoga before? Fetuses go through all 84 yoga poses before they are born, so we've all done yoga! The real yoga starts, though, when we take our first breath. Breathing is the very first step in yoga.

Just Breathe, Really!

So if you really want to give yourself a huge gift of healing and relaxation during the day, breathe. Set aside three minutes to give yourself this gift. Turn off the phone, close the door, dim the lights, and just breathe. You can either breathe deeply and deliberately, holding inhales and exhales for several counts, or you can relax by just following your breath but exerting no effort.

Breathing not only increases circulation and oxygen in your body, but it nourishes your lungs, which according to Chinese medicine guards your chi or life force. Talk about the "breath of life"-breathing really can bring new energy, vitality, and zest into your life. You'll feel better, think more clearly, and act from greater inspiration.

Adding More to Your Meditation

If you've got more than three minutes to spare, you can add even more layers to this quick "meditation" with some colored candles. Burn a sun yellow candle for more joy, bright red for more energy, light blue for more understanding, grass green for grounding and physical healing or water blue for calming and connection with your Spirit. Candles actually "push" the colors at you, so you absorb those energies without effort.

If you take a few minutes each day to breathe, be present in your body, and be connected to Life, you can say that you do yoga and meditation every day. Quantity isn't all that counts, quality counts too. When you're deeply present, even for a few moments every day, you can take great strides in both your physical and spiritual life!

Death Ultimate Freedom

Death, death is both painful, but at the same time beautiful. One thing that has changed since I left the church so many years ago, is my view on death. I used to fear death so much, I didnt want to die. Every birthday became one step closer till the end. In my teens I dreaded 18 I thought it was the end, in my late teens I dreaded 21, and in my 20 I dread 30. Each time "it will be the end" I thought. Perhaps because I have been trapped in the brain washing of my up bringing and the church. It wasnt untill I really began to study Wicca and Paganism that I found freedom. I think that for me it wasnt the loss of the life, but the loss of the ones I loved, combine with the thought "have I done enough?" I found comfort and freedom in this quote........

"Gone was my dread. Now there was....a sense of absolute correctness about it. It did not belong to the dark at all. I belonged to the dark, Death was part of the grace of nature....I had been so scared and wanted so badly to live, but the peace I touched was so incredibly, transcendentally great that I also now loved death a little, or at least I accepted the truth and presence of it in my own life." ~Whitely Strieber

Embracing death and accepting its presence in your life doesn't make the death of a loved one any easier. Living with a former Marine, with PTSD and a soft heart can rip your soul right out. Especially when you are an empath, and you have watched the effects that violent deaths, and peaceful passing can do to even the strongest. The worst is the depression that death can cause when his hero and Grandfather dies. Old age doesn't make it any easier does it? I have found myself this week giving comfort, and talking and talking about death, and what a Great man he was, and OH what A great man, he was! I'm not just saying this because he was family, or because he accepted me into the family and gave me unconditional love when no one else would. He was wise, and taught my Marine how to be a man, and gave him love and kindness. These things can be hard, I know that my Marine is in pain, it doesnt matter if it was the loss of one of his men, or his grandfather. Death hurts, but in this pain and sorrow there is the light at the end of the tunnel. The unknown that lies behind the door of mortality. This is NOT the end. There will be a gap, but I am fully confident that they will be together in a future life, love is the bridge that transcends death, and brings souls together over and over again, but this does ease the pain. Promotion to the "Mighty Dead" also brings comfort. There are no more hugs, and no more visits, but his presence lingers, and being such an important part of his life, I do believe that he will continue to be a part of my Marnies life regardless of his human mortality................

So this brings me to something that I have been thinking for a while. We didn't make it before his death, our flights were not quick enough, and we didn't leave fast enough. Now there will be no funeral, or ceremony. This is sad for us, but we will be walking the Labyrinth in his honor tomorrow night. His last wishes were no funeral, no fuss. We will respect this, but it got me thinking about my own ending in this life. There is NO reason I have to be buried in the family grave yard, cremated or any other traditional way. My last wishes can be just that "MY wishes" and So I begin the journey of laying out how things will go in my final moments.......

The Lady of Shalott has been such an important part of my life from my mid teens till today. It is ever evolving and OH how this poem, touches me. As I drove out of my neighborhood yesterday I watched the leaves falling to the ground in piles of golds and bronze. I giggled and thought, only in Arizona can it be fall in January. Death is everywhere comes at any time, and is not picky who or what it takes. Death manifests in many forms physical, emotional and spiritual. The circle ever turns waiting for no one.......

So as I think of my own mortality, and passing I find that I want to go out with a splash! And so I will. There are logistical issues with how I want to die, and how I want to go out of this world, this time. I will leave that to those that will help me pass...... It makes sense that I should go out with deep meaning to me. It is my death, and my funeral and so I will take a lesson from a very wise man who just passed, and do it the way I want...........

I want a watery death......

CALL OF THE GOD

I am the radiant King of the Heavens, flooding the Earth with warmth and encouraging the hidden seed of creation to burst forth into manifestation. I lift my shining spear to light the lives of all beings and daily pour forth my gold upon the Earth, putting to flight the powers of darkness.

Who Imbuing Who Thoughts On Americanizing Buddhism

Many western Buddhists are enthusiastic about the idea of "modernizing" and/or "americanizing" (or "westernizing") Buddhism. Inevitably one hears that this is what Buddhism has always done as it moves from culture to culture. But how seriously have people examined and thought about this process of acclimatization?Personally I tend to agree with the late Jamgon Kongtrul, an important figure in the modern Ri-me (nonsectarian) movement within Tibetan Buddhism who said this: "it is important for the values of Buddhism to imbue a culture, not for those of a culture to imbue Buddhism."The context for this is given below, which is taken from the Translator's Introduction to The Autobiography of Jamgon Kongtrul: A Gem of Many Colors (translated into English by Richard Barron). Note that the autobiography was written by the first Jamgon Kongtrul (who founded the Ri-me movement in the 19th century), while the quote is from the third Jamgon Kongtrul, who died in 1992.In the mid 1980s, I had the opportunity to interpret a public talk given by the late Jamg"on Kongtrul Rinpoch'e in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. During that evening, Rinpoch'e spoke of the ri-m'e approach. He defined this quite succinctly: "To adopt the ri-m'e approach means to follow your own chosen path with dedication, while maintaining respect and tolerance for all other valid choices." The operative word here is "valid"; what is meant is not a blanket acceptance of anyone's doctrines. A khenpo of the Nyingma School recently remarked to me, "We are to maintain a pure outlook toward all other beings, but not necessarily toward their opinions." This is anything but a sloppy approach. In insisting on the freedom for everyone to choose a spiritual path, and on the validity of all authentic alternatives, the ri-m'e approach is broadminded, avoiding the all-too-common pitfall of exclusivism, but does not promote simplistic beliefs. Our prejudices concerning spiritual matters may come from issues that are personal, ideological, or cultural, but regardless of their origin, these prejudices can place severe limits on our own ability to grow spiritually. Jamg"on Kongtrul also stressed, in that evening talk, that it is important for the values of Buddhism to imbue a culture, not for those of a culture to imbue Buddhism. The ri-m'e approach was not intended to serve some other agenda, but to provide a context for honoring the contemplative life in all of its manifestations.Jamg"on Kongtrul Lodr"o Thay'e was born into a culture that had been host to the Buddhist teachings for a millennium. Throughout its long history, the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism has seen many periods of mutual tolerance, particularly in the early stages of its development, when there was much interaction between the schools. We find accounts of many individuals who studied with masters of all schools and who in turn taught students from all schools. But there have been just as many times when political rivalries and power struggles led to sectarian polemic and even outright hostility. In a few cases, entire schools were suppressed. It would be bad enough if the grounds in such cases were (as claimed) doctrinal, in the name of keeping the teachings pure, but all too often a more mundane purpose was bring served. Only by believing may we enjoy the precious atonement of Christ, the forgiveness obtained for us and given us out of profound, inexpressible love.

John Calvin: Let us explain what these expressions mean: that man is justified in Gods sight, and that he is justified by faith or works. He is said to be justified in Gods sight who is both reckoned righteous in Gods judgment and has been accepted on account of his righteousness. Indeed as iniquity is abominable to God, so no sinner can find favor in his eyes in so far as he is a sinner and so long as he is reckoned as such. Accordingly wherever there is sin, there also the wrath and vengeance of God show themselves.

Now he is justified who is reckoned in the condition not of a sinner, but of a righteous man; and for that reason, he stands firm before Gods judgment seat while all sinners fall. If an innocent accused person be summoned before the judgment seat of a fair judge, where he will be judged according to his innocence, he is said to be justified before the judge.

Thus, justified before God is the man who, freed from the company of sinners, has God to witness and affirm his righteousness. In the same way, therefore, he in whose life that purity and holiness will be found which deserves a testimony of righteousness before Gods throne will be said to be justified by works, or else he who, by the wholeness of his works, can meet and satisfy Gods judgment.

On the contrary, justified by faith is he who, excluded from the righteousness of works, grasps the righteousness of Christ through faith, and clothed in it, appears in Gods sight not as a sinner but as a righteous man.

Therefore we explain justification simply as the acceptance with which God receives us into his favor as righteous men. And we say that it consists in the remission of sins and the imputation of Christs righteousness.

Therefore, to justify means nothing else than to acquit of guilt him who was accused, as if his innocence were confirmed. Therefore, since God justifies us by the intercession of Christ, he absolves us not by the confirmation of our innocence but by the imputation of righteousness, so that we who are not righteous in ourselves may be reckoned as such in Christ (John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion. The object and power of true faith

Since Jesus Christ is the object of faith, and indeed Jesus Christ as He is held forth to us in the Word of God, there follow two points which should be noted well.

On the one side, where there is no Word of God but only the word of man, whoever he be, there is no faith there, but only a dream or an opinion which cannot fail to deceive us (Rom 10:2-4; Mark 16:15,16; Rom 1:28; Gal 1:8-9).

On the other side, faith embraces and appropriates Jesus Christ and all that is in Him, since He has been given to us on the condition of believing in Him (John 17:20,21; Rom 8:9). There follows one of two things: either all that is necessary for our salvation is not in Jesus Christ, or if all is indeed there, he who has Jesus Christ by faith has everything. Now, to say that all which is necessary for our salvation is not in Jesus Christ is a very horrible blasphemy, for this would only make Him a Saviour in part (Matt 1:21).

There remains therefore the other part: in having Jesus Christ, by faith, we have in Him all that is required for our salvation (Rom 5:1).

INTUITIVE ART

BURNING MAN

Arguably the greatest intuitive art gallery in the world is the one that appears every year in the Black Rock desert at the Burning Man festival, as tens of thousands of (mostly self-taught) people create everything from art installations to mutant vehicles to fantastical costumes. Be the person you always wanted to be, dress the way you've always wanted to dress, assume the identity of any character you've ever wanted to become. This is the invitation that burn events offer, and while much of it is whimsical, any authentic, boundary-expanding leap of self-expression carries with it a profound impression that leaves participants with experiences that stick with them their whole lives. The reason the popular greeting "Welcome home!" is so often heard is that people are returning home to their original selves, with the permission and encouragement to create their reality and be exactly who they've always wanted to be. This is personal mythology at its essence, and in action on a huge scale.

AVATARISM

So you begin to make intuitive art in your spare time, and you attend burn events, but these actions remain in the margins of your life - a special retreat, rather than the norm. How do you integrate personal mythos into your daily life? One exciting answer to that question is a new movement called Avatarism. The Trouble With Atheism Channel 4

Did we like it?

A dogmatic diatribe by Rod Liddle that was forever teetering on the brink of its own crumbling credibility as he set about debunking the sanctimonious pomposity of atheism with a style of prejudicial propaganda not heard on these shores since Lord Haw Haw was silenced.

What was good about it?

o For all of the programme's faults, it justified its existence through its willingness to address and challenge staid, complacent intellectual ideals. The fact that Rod was so cack-handed in his approach only slightly spoilt the spectacle of provocative television in a slot that on Friday housed the execrable Unanimous.

What was bad about it?

o Rod referred to the lack of God as a negative, as it presupposes that the universe is somehow lessened without a divine being. But as he was referring to the narrow monotheistic Christian faith, is Christianity not a 'negative' too as it assumes just one God while Hinduism, for instance, revels in polytheism?

o Whether or not Rod believes in divinity or was simply acting as an agent provocateur is irrelevant as he slanted the argument far too much towards the existence of God. When listing what are commonly seen as the virtues of atheism he spat out the words with utter disdain as if to attempt to dispel their veracity with the tone of his voice alone.

o While the section of atheists against whom Rod was railing no doubt exist and wish to crush every last iota of religious faith beneath their steel-heeled jackboots, he seemed oblivious to the fact that the majority of atheists follow their own credo out of nothing more than apathy and are quite blas'e, even sympathetic, to anyone who may follow a particular belief.

o Rod mischievously used the scientists' own rigid system of proof against them when he discussed what happened 'before' the Big Bang. As scientists have no concept of what existed 'before' then, Rod and his ilk assume that the hole in their arguments is automatically a God-shaped hole when the Big Bang might just as easily be someone sneezing and all the stellar matter is their snot spreading slowly across the empty universe.

o Rod's polarised questioning of his subjects. Anyone spouting forth that God does exist was given a smooth ride and little or no challenge was made to their words. Atheists, however, were interrogated to such a degree that Rod was only missing a spotlight and branding iron. And whenever the argument ascended to heights he could not intellectually scale, he simply slagged them off in his voiceover.

o Rod's efforts to slander the philosophy of Darwin also met a sticky self-delusional end. "At 147 years old Darwinism is getting on a bit" was among his attempts to seed doubt in the viewer's mind with hogwashed waffle, and he fol-lowed it up with the equally vague: "I'm pretty sure that Darwin's theory will be superseded."

o And all the while, he seemed wilfully ignorant that while Darwin's theories may prove not to be absolutely correct they will only be replaced by other proofs rigorously tested by science and not some nebulous religious edicts. And it is because of science's willingness to admit it might be wrong that will forever make it a far better barometer of evolutionary truth than religion.

o Rod then proceeded to clumsily stumble into very dangerous territory when he suggested that Darwin inadvertently paved the way for eugenics. Yes, the founder of eugenics may have been inspired by Darwin's theory of natural selection, yet in formulating such a philosophy threw his own compassion out of the window, a compassion that is a central tenet of human evolution - that of caring for the weakest members of society.

o And Rod mired himself in even swampier ground when he queried: "Is there a connection between Darwinism and Hitler?" This was posited to suggest Hitler may have exterminated Jews because he believed them to be inherently inferior, yet Rod must have known that Hitler's hatred of Jews was born out him blaming them for the Fatherland losing the First World War and consequent collapse of German society rather than any idea of biological inadequacy, which was no doubt added as a delusional disclaimer by the Nazis once the discrimination began.

o Rod concluded by giving a few highly-selective instances of where societies in which God has been rejected have been even more barbarous than any society adhered to religion. Of course, the obvious example is Stalin's Soviet Union yet, as was pointed out to Rod, Stalin wasn't actually killing in the name of atheism; what had occurred is that the Communists had stumbled upon an even more effective way of oppressing the populace than keeping them in line with religion, which until then had mostly been the weapon of choice for despots around the globe.
