Yule or Yuletide ("Yule time") is a festival originally observed by the Northern European peoples. It is the time at which the sun appears at noon at its lowest altitude above the horizon.
The earliest references to Yule are by way of indigenous Germanic month names (AErra J'eola (Before Yule) or Jiuli and AEftera J'eola (After Yule). Scholars have connected the celebration to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin and the Pagan Anglo-Saxon Modranicht.
This is the Winter Solstice Festival in the Southern Hemisphere, when the sun, after its withdrawal and the longest night of the Year, begins to come closer to the Earth. This new closeness marks the rebirth of the God from his own seed planted on the Goddess.
Yule is a solar festival in which traditionally all lights and fires were put down. A new fire was started at midnight using rubbing methods. From that first fire all the rest were lit.
As a fire festival a popular custom at this time is the burning of the Yule logs. The Yule log must traditionally be the root of a hardwood tree, and in Australia mallee roots are ideal for this purpose, as are Tasmanian oaks and all types of Eucalyptus.
At Midwinter, decorate your home with evergreen, non-deciduous trees, and give gifts to all family members and all who pass the threshold. It is traditional to give to charities at this time, and to care, even more than usual, for the sick and poverty-stricken members of the community.
This is also a special time to care for animals. As an antithesis to the traditional (but necessary) slaughter that used to occur at this time of year, modern Australian Witches and Pagans may choose to donate time and or money to animal charities. By doing so, you honor and acknowledge the importance of all of the creatures in this world.
