Here are President Sarkozy's travel plans, conveyed to us by Yves Daoudal, who also does some speculating:On December 20, Nicolas Sarkozy will pay a visit to Pope Benedict XVI, then he will "participate in the annual custom, the ceremony for France, at the Church of Saint John Lateran, a ceremony that has been taking place, on that date approximately, every year since Henry IV," according to Elys'ee spokesman David Martinon. "On the occasion of this ceremony, the president will take possession of the stall of canon of honor of Saint John Lateran. Since the Kings of France, it has been tradition that the French heads of State have this title bestowed upon them."This "extremely important" trip will also be an "opportunity for the president to reiterate his respect and his attachment, not to any particular religion, even if, naturally, the Christian religion holds an important place in France historically and currently, but in a general way, to spirituality, since he has always considered it to be at the heart of our citizens, whatever their faith," according to David Martinon. Now there's a fine illustration of the very relativism that the Pope tirelessly denounces.Since this announcement was made on December 13, before the revelation about the love affair with Carla Bruni, it isn't known if Nicolas Sarkozy will be accompanied by his mistress.Nor is it known if he will take her to Egypt where (as Francois Mitterand did in 1995), he will spend the last days of the year, "in the company of close family members and friends."Carla Bruni will turn 39 on December 23. On December 25 Nicolas Sarkozy will arrive in Egypt, in Luxor. It isn't known if he will remember that this date has a special meaning for a particular religion. But he is being careful to spend Christmas in a country where December 25 has no meaning, for either the Muslims or the Copts (who celebrate January 7).From December 27 to 29, he will be in Sharm el-Sheikh, the famous resort, and two days later in Cairo for an official visit. For more on the famous Saint John Lateran Basilica, see Wikipedia.
