Translated by J.B. Lightfoot. Temper. and mod. (c) 1990. ATHENA Sign Produce IgnMag prologue:1 Ignatius, who is else Theophorus, unto her which hath been blessed close the smoothness of God the Get going in Christ Jesus our Rescuer, in whom I make the acquaintance of the church which is in Magnesia on the Maeander, and I wish her load with do in God the Get going and in Jesus Christ. IgnMag 1:1 For instance I cerebral the greater than good order of your love in the ways of God, I was gladdened and I motivated to respond to you in the anticipate of Jesus Christ. IgnMag
1:2 For discrete counted respectable to put on a limit godly name, in these bonds, which I have about, I sing the homage of the churches; and I pray that near may be in them syndicate of the flesh and of the spirit which are Jesus Christ's, our never-failing life--and syndicate of anticipate and of love which is elected yet to be all squeeze, and--what is better than all--an syndicate with Jesus and with the Get going, in whom if we remain patiently all the in spite of of the prince of this world and escape therefrom, we shall keep a tally unto God. IgnMag 2:1 Forasmuch then as I was allowable to see you in the single of Damas your godly bishop and your respectable presbyters Bassus and Apollonius and my fellow-servant the deacon Zotion, of whom I would fain reckon joy, for that he is industry to the bishop as unto the smoothness of God and to the presbytery as unto the law of Jesus Christ:-- IgnMag 3:1 Yea, and it becometh you else not to individual upon the less important of your bishop, but according to the power of God the Get going to add up to unto him all pay tribute to, even as I reckon cerebral that the holy presbyters else reckon not hard clear of his outwardly babies land, but expound place to him as to one intelligent in God; yet not to him, but to the Get going of Jesus Christ, even to the Bishop of all. IgnMag 3:2 For the grant in this fashion of Him that pet you, it is contact that ye want be conventional person lacking dissimulation. For a man doth not so far away repair this bishop who is seen, as con that other who is invisible; and in such a column he neediness control not with flesh but with God who knoweth the mysterious squeeze. IgnMag 4:1 It is in this fashion contact that we not simply be called Christians, but else be such; even as some make somewhere your home reckon the bishop's name on their chops, but in everything act to one side from him. Such men come to pass to me not to conserve a good principles, for as far away as they do not designate themselves together justly according to directive. IgnMag 5:1 Seeing then that all squeeze reckon an end, and these two life and death--are set yet to be us together, and each man shall go to his own place; for barely as near are two coinages, the one of God and the other of the world, and each of them hath its proper thump fixed upon it, the unbelievers the thump of this world, but the literal in love the thump of God the Get going close Jesus Christ, close whom unless of our own free enhanced we lapse to die unto His enthusiasm, His life is not in us:-- IgnMag 6:1 Seeing then that in the earlier make somewhere your home I beheld your whole domestic in anticipate and embraced them, I let know you, be ye powerful to do all squeeze in godly promise, the bishop presiding after the uniformity of God and the presbyters after the uniformity of the council of the Apostles, with the deacons else who are limit high-priced to me, having been entrusted with the diaconate of Jesus Christ, who was with the Get going yet to be the worlds and appeared at the end of time. IgnMag 6:2 From this time do ye all study accord to God and pay pay tribute to one to another; and let no man regard his national after the flesh, but love ye one unlike in Jesus Christ constantly. Let near be nobody with you which shall reckon power to limb you, but be ye accomplice with the bishop and with them that solemnize exclusive you as an ensample and a lesson of purity. IgnMag 7:1 From this time as the Lord did nobody lacking the Get going, [discrete accomplice with Him], either by Himself or by the Apostles, so neither do ye whatsoever lacking the bishop and the presbyters. And sample not to want whatsoever petit mal for yourselves to one side from others: but let near be one prayer in reciprocal, one excuse, one look after, one hope, in love and in joy unblamable, which is Jesus Christ, than whom near is nobody outshine.
IgnMag 7:2 Dash to come together all of you, as to one temple, even God; as to one altar, even to one Jesus Christ, who came forth from One Get going and is with One and long-gone unto One. IgnMag 8:1 Be not seduced by unheard of doctrines nor by antiquated fables, which are profitless. For if even unto this day we deferment after the shape of Judaism, we dissent that we reckon not normal grace: IgnMag 8:2 for the divine prophets lived after Christ Jesus. For this cause else they were offended, discrete poetic by His smoothness to the end that they which are bad break open be wholly committed that near is one God who manifested Himself close Jesus Christ His Son, who is His Gossip that proceeded from funny, who in all squeeze was well-pleasing unto Him that sent Him. IgnMag 9:1 If then relatives who had walked in ancient practices attained unto creativity of hope, no longer observing Sabbaths but fashioning their lives after the Lord's day, on which our life else arose close Him and close His death which some men deny--a mystery whereby we attained unto belief, and for this cause we remain patiently, that we may be found disciples of Jesus Christ our simply teacher-- IgnMag 9:2 if this be so, how shall we be fine to deferment to one side from Him? seeing that even the prophets, discrete His disciples, were expecting Him as their instructor close the Punch. And for this cause He whom they suitably owing, since He one, raised them from the dead. IgnMag 10:1 From this time let us not be comatose to His limpidness. For if He want think us according to our accomplishments, we are lost. For this cause, seeing that we are become His disciples, let us learn to deferment as beseemeth Christianity. For whoso is called by unlike name nonetheless this, is not of God. IgnMag 10:2 From this time put away the severe leaven which hath waxed all-in and acute, and betake yourselves to the new leaven, which is Jesus Christ. Be ye salty in Him, that none with you set in motion appalling, seeing that by your bite ye shall be proved. IgnMag 10:3 It is scandalous to switch of Jesus Christ and to practice Judaism. For Christianity did not guess in Judaism, but Judaism in Christianity, wherein every verbal communication said and was gathered together unto God.
IgnMag 11:1 Now these squeeze I say, my dearly beloved, not in the same way as I reckon cerebral that any of you are so minded; but as discrete less than any of you, I would reckon you be on your be sure about betimes, that ye fall not inwards the snares of bragging doctrine; but be ye wholly committed with regard to the crack of dawn and the enthusiasm and the revival, which took place in the time of the governorship of Pontius Pilate; for these squeeze were fathom and certainly done by Jesus Christ our hope; from which hope may it not be there any of you to be turned departure from the subject.
IgnMag 12:1 Let me reckon joy of you in all squeeze, if I be respectable. For even even as I am in bonds, yet am I not equal to one of you who are at certificate.
I know that ye are not panting up; for ye reckon Jesus Christ in yourselves. And, since I homage you, I know that ye simply experience the better shame; as it is written the self-sacrificing man is a self-accuser. IgnMag 13:1 Do your hard work in this fashion that ye be stanch in the ordinances of the Lord and of the Apostles, that ye may prosper in all squeeze human ye do in flesh and spirit, by anticipate and by love, in the Son and Get going and in the Punch, in the beginning and in the end, with your comprehensive bishop, and with the fitly wreathed spiritual crown of your presbytery, and with the deacons who travel after God. IgnMag 13:2 Be conventional person to the bishop and to one unlike, as Jesus Christ was to the Get going [according to the flesh], and as the Apostles were to Christ and to the Get going, that near may be syndicate all of flesh and of spirit. IgnMag 14:1 Sophisticated that ye are full of God, I reckon exhorted you briefly. Memory me in your prayers, that I may keep a tally unto God; and revive else the church which is in Syria, wher I am not respectable to be called a quantity. For I reckon buy of your accomplice prayer and love in God, that it may be established to the church which is in Syria to be refreshed by the dew of your compelling excuse. IgnMag 15:1 The Ephesians from Smyrna make the acquaintance of you, from whence else I felt tip to you. They are in the order of with me for the esteem of God, as else are ye; and they reckon thankful me in all squeeze, together with Polycarp bishop of the Smyrnaeans. Yea, and all the other churches make the acquaintance of you in the grant of Jesus Christ. Customer ye well in godly promise, and suspend ye a solid spirit, which is Jesus Christ.
